Description

Early American politician (1757-1842) who served as the second United States Secretary of the Navy from 1801 to 1809, the sixth United States Secretary of State from 1809 to 1811, and briefly as Attorney General. Hand-addressed mailing envelope from the Navy Department, 5 x 3, filled out in another hand and postmarked at Washington on June 29 [1806], addressed to “Lieut. D’l Tod Patterson, New Orleans,” and boldly franked above, "Rt Smith.” In very good condition, with creasing, soiling, and two vertical folds. Encapsulated in a PSA/DNA authentication holder, grading the autograph as "EX-MT 6.”

Daniel Todd Patterson (1786-1839) was a notable officer in the United States Navy who played key roles during the Quasi-War with France, the First Barbary War, and the War of 1812.
