Description

Ink signature, "Faithfully yours, Charles Dickens, Washington, Eighth February 1868,” on an off-white 4 x 2.25 slip. Archivally matted and framed with a portrait of the author to an overall size of 16.25 x 16.25. In fine condition, with a trimmed top edge.

Dickens made his second trip to America in 1867-1868, touring the country and giving public readings along the way, where he was delighted and impressed at the reception given him. The tour took him to the nation's capital from February 3-9th, during which time he gave four readings at Carroll Hall. On February 7th, the novelist's 56th birthday, he was received at the White House by President Andrew Johnson.

The National Republican reported on his last reading in the District of Columbia: 'At the close Mr. Dickens was enthusiastically applauded. He took his leave in a neat speech, in which he said: 'Ladies and Gentlemen: In all probability I shall never see your faces again; but I can assure you that yours have yielded me as much pleasure as I have given you.' Thus ended the most highly delightful entertainment that the citizens of Washington have ever enjoyed.'
