Rare partly-printed DS, in Polish, signed “J. Pilsudski,” one page, 4.25 x 7, March 12, 1926. Issued at Warsaw as No. 2636, a certificate of Legion Cross, which reads (translated): “On the basis of the resolution of the 2nd Legionnaires' Congress, the 1st application of the qualification commission grants Chief Michal Podgorski, the Legion's Cross.” Signed below by Jozef Pilsudski, and countersigned by Walery Slawek, the Prime Minister of Poland and one of Pilsudski's closest aides. In fine condition.
This rare award certificate marks the first signed item that we have offered from Pilsudski, one which is made all the more desirable and important given its proximity to the historic May Coup, which was carried out by Marshal Pilsudski and his supporters from May 12 to 14, 1926. The coup resulted in the overthrow of the Democratically elected government of President Stanislaw Wojciechowski and Prime Minister Wincenty Witos and caused hundreds of fatalities.
