Partly-printed vellum DS as president, one page, 15.5 x 19, July 1, 1893. Grover Cleveland appoints Charles R. Emrich as an "Assistant Engineer in the Navy, with the relative rank of Ensign." Signed at the conclusion by Cleveland as president and countersigned by Hilary A. Herbert as secretary of the Navy. Lower vignette bears the original blue Navy Department seal. In very good to fine condition, with minor loss to the lower right edge, and some light dampstaining. Accompanied by a full letter of authenticity from PSA/DNA. Charles Rolf Emrich (1870-1900) was admitted to the Naval Academy on May 19, 1887. As a senior, he served as captain of the Navy Academy football team during their historic first match-up with arch-rival Army, a game that Navy won 24-0. Emrich died of typhoid in Hong Kong on February 23, 1900, at the age of 29.
