French-American traveler and anthropologist (1835-1903) best known as the first modern outsider to confirm the existence of gorillas and the Pygmy people of central Africa. Two items: a purple ink signature, "Yours very truly, P. B. Du Chaillu," on an off-white 3.25 x 2 card; and an ALS signed "P. B. Du Chaillu," four pages on two adjoining sheets, 5.25 x 8, December 20, 1868, in part: "I wish to you and your family a merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. I am on my way back to New York or rather the East after an extensive tour of lectures which have been successful at the exception of two or three places on account of the bad weather. St. Louis proved to be a dead failure, I had less of an audience there than every where else." In overall very good to fine condition, with mounting remnants to edges of the signed card.
