British polymath (1794-1866) who made contributions to theology, philosophy, poetry, architecture, mechanics, physics, geology, astronomy, and economics. He is also remembered for coining several new terms—including 'scientist,' 'physicist,' 'linguistics,' and 'astigmatism,' among others. ALS signed “W. Whewell,” one page, 4.75 x 7.75, March 17, 1847. Handwritten letter to a gentleman, evidently a bookseller. In full: "The price which you mention appears a reasonable one, and I see no reason why it should not be as you say. The copy arrived and is very pretty." In fine condition, with light toning.
