Description

A month before Burr became the 3rd VP

Manuscript DS, signed “A. Burr,” one page, 8 x 4, September 29, 1800. Pay order issued to the "Cashier of the Manhattan Company," requesting that $107 be paid to "Joseph Lyon or order." Neatly signed below by Aaron Burr. In very good to fine condition, with toning, tears, and loss to the edges, not at all affecting the signature. A month later at the 1800 United States presidential election, the Democratic-Republican ticket of Thomas Jefferson and Aaron Burr edged Federalists John Adams and Charles C. Pinckney. An unintentional electoral college tie between Burr and Jefferson resulted in the House of Representatives voting in Jefferson's favor, with Burr becoming Jefferson's vice president due to receiving the second-highest share of the votes. Although Burr maintained that he supported Jefferson, the president was highly suspicious of Burr, who was relegated to the sidelines of the administration during his vice presidency and not re-nominated as Jefferson's running mate in 1804.
