Description

Scott and six others from the fateful Terra Nova Expedition

Scarce set of pencil signatures belonging to members of the Terra Nova Expedition—Robert Falcon Scott, “R. Scott,” Edward L. Atkinson, “E. L. Atkinson,” Henry Robertson Bowers, “H. R. Bowers,” Edward W. Nelson, “E. W. Nelson,” Henry Edward de Parny Rennick, “H. Rennick,” and two others. In very good condition, with creasing, intersecting folds, overall foxing, and an old tape stain touching Bowers' last name. The consignor notes that these signatures were obtained by Gladys Cazenave, the wife of William Cazenave, owner of the Diamond Boat Building Company in Cardiff, Wales, at the expedition’s farewell dinner held at Cardiff’s Royal Hotel on June 13, 1910.

In addition to Scott, two other notable autographs are those of Henry ‘Birdie’ Bowers (1883-1912), a member of Scott's polar party on the ill-fated Terra Nova Expedition of 1910-1913, and Edward Atkinson (1881-1929), a Royal Navy surgeon who was a member of the scientific staff of the Terra Nova Expedition. He was in command of the expedition's base at Cape Evans for much of 1912, and led the party which found the tent containing the bodies of Scott, Bowers, and Edward Wilson.
