ALS signed “Dan'l Webster,” one page both sides, 4.75 x 7.25, May 8, 1843, his last day in office as U.S. Secretary of State. Handwritten letter of recommendation to Attorney General Hugh S. Legare, who would replace Webster as ad Interim U.S. Secretary of State the following day. In full: “Mr. Cohendorfer, the bearer of this, has been employed by me, several times, as bearer of Dispatches. He has always executed the duties faithfully, & promptly. Indeed, I have had no agent quite so expeditious. I recommend him to you, if occasions should arise for services of that description.” In very good to fine condition, with scattered light staining, and partial separation along the hinge.
