French composer (1818-1893) best remembered for his composition of 'Ave Maria.' ALS in French, signed “Ch. Gounod,” one page, 8.25 x 10.5, Orphéon de la Ville de Paris letterhead, April 11, 1854. Untranslated handwritten letter to the choral society, signed at the conclusion by Gounod as its director. In fine condition, with light creasing, a rusty circular paperclip impression to the top, and some minor foxing.
