Description

Partly-printed DS as president, signed “Wm. H. Taft,” one page, 10.25 x 14, August 10, 1910. President Taft appoints George W. Fairchild of New York as "Special Commissioner of the United States of America, with the rank of Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary, to attend the ceremonies which are to take place in the City of Mexico, in September next, incident to the celebration of the first centennial of the Republic of Mexico." Signed neatly at the conclusion by William H. Taft, and countersigned by Acting Secretary of State Huntington Wilson. Lower portion bears the original large wafer seal. In very good to fine condition, with overall toning, and some staining to the upper right corner.

George Winthrop Fairchild (1854-1924), was a six-term Republican U.S. Representative from New York, who, prior to joining Congress, was a businessman and investor, best known as the chairman from 1915 to 1924 of the Computing-Tabulating-Recording Company, which later became IBM. Fairchild was elected vice president of the International Peace Conference, and, as is evidenced here, was appointed by President Taft on August 10, 1910, as special commissioner to the First Centenary of Mexico at Mexico City.
