Description

American soldier and statesman (1753-1831) who was aide-de-camp to Benedict Arnold prior to the latter's defection to the British. Varick later served as Washington's private secretary, mayor of New York, and a New York state legislator. Scarce Revolutionary War-dated ALS signed “Rich'd Varick, Major of Brigade,” one page, 8 x 12.75, April 5, 1781. Handwritten letter to a lieutenant colonel, transmitting paperwork and commenting on an exemption list. In part: "General Gansevoort desires that all such Persons, who are under the Age of 50 Years, as have heretofore held civil or military offices & as by the 30th section of the Militia Law were privileged to associate as Exempts & choose their own Officers & who have neglected to avail themselves of the Priviledge or who have neglected to join any Company of Exempts in their proper District, shall do Duty, be enrolled with & comprized in the next Return of the enrolled Militia of that District." In fine condition, with scattered staining and minor edge losses.
