Description

Dickens pays his tour manager in 1866

Coutts & Company bank check, 7.5 x 3.75, filled out and signed by Dickens, "Charles Dickens," payable to "George Dolby Esquire" for £10.0.0, May 14, 1866. Professionally inlaid into a larger sheet and in fine condition. A theatre manager by trade, Dolby was hired by Dickens in 1866 to manage his reading tour of Great Britain. The first tour lasted for three months and included London, Liverpool, Edinburgh, Manchester, Glasgow, Birmingham, Aberdeen, and Portsmouth. By the end, the two men were great friends.
