Description

Rare and important railroad bond signed by the American Express co-founder, payable in gold coin

Co-founder of American Express and Wells Fargo (1805-1878). Very important partly-printed DS, signed “Henry Wells,” one page, 17.5 x 27, September 15, 1874. First mortgage bond of the Canyon Lake Rail Road Company in the amount of $1000, neatly signed in ink by Henry Wells as president, and countersigned by the treasurer and two trustees. The handsome oversized certificate boasts a stunning vignette of a steam engine train, and retains 53 of its coupons. The bond carries a rate of 7%, payable "in Gold coin of the United States." In fine, folded condition. A rare and visually stunning example.
