Description

Rare and important $100 bond of the Western North Carolina Railroad Company issued March 1, 1870, 14.25 x 20.75, with 40 coupons intact below. First mortgage bond payable at a rate of 8%, signed on the front by the company's president, Samuel McDowell Tate, and secretary, and endorsed on the reverse by Henry Clews and one other trustee. In very good to fine condition, with a few short edge tears, and toning. Tate (1830-1897) was a North Carolina merchant, soldier, railroad official, and legislator. Clews (1834-1923) was a British-American financier and author who served as an economic consultant to President Ulysses Grant.
