Protestant theologian and philosopher (1892-1971) who reshaped much of American thought concerning society, politics, and the meaning of history. TLS signed “R. Niebuhr,” one page, 8.25 x 11, September 22, [1943]. Letter to civil right activist and NAACP executive secretary Walter White, in full: "You have given a quarter of a century to the struggle of your people for a higher justice in our American democracy. You have been a leader of rare courage and resourcefulness. You have frequently rescued triumph out of defeat. In serving your own minority group you have no less served the cause of democracy in the nation; for injustice is a detriment to both the victim and the beneficiary. I am honored to join with your many friends in paying our tribute to your distinguished service. May you be spared for another quarter century of such leadership." In fine condition.
Walter Francis White was a civil rights activist (1893-1955) who led the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) for a quarter of a century, 1929-1955, after joining the organization as an investigator in 1918. Under White's leadership, the NAACP set up its Legal Defense Fund, which conducted numerous legal challenges to segregation and disfranchisement, and achieved many successes. Among these was the Supreme Court ruling in Brown v. Board of Education (1954), which determined that segregated education was inherently unequal.
