Celebrated German writer, scientist, and philosopher (1749-1832) who takes a place among the central intellectual and artistic figures of his day. His poetry and dramatic works provided source material for Beethoven, Schubert, and Berlioz, among others. Scarce envelope addressed in the hand of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, 7 x 4.5, with the original red wax seal, impressed with his family crest, still affixed on the reverse. Goethe penned the upper six lines in darker ink; the bottom two are written in an unknown, lighter hand. In very good condition, with toning, stains, and chips and tears to the edges.
