Signed book: The Roar of the Crowd: The True Tale of the Rise and Fall of a Champion. First edition. NY: G. P. Putnam's Sons, 1925. Hardcover with dust jacket, 6 x 8.25, 329 pages. Signed and inscribed on a free end page in fountain pen, "To my dear friend Walter Smith, with warmest regards from Jas. J. Corbett, Bayside, N.Y., June 11/28." In very good to fine condition, with a prior owner's bookplate, foxing to the pastedowns, a small crack to the inner front hinge, and slight chipping to the dust jacket. The consignor speculates that the recipient may have been the Pulitzer Prize-winning sports journalist Walter 'Red' Smith, who in 1928 was one year removed from college and seeking a job as a sportswriter.
