Original oversized semi-glossy 16.5 x 12.25 silver gelatin print of Paul Newman and actress Christine White by photographer Roy Schatt, who has signed in the lower right corner in black ink. The photo is affixed to its original 19.75 x 15.5 mount, the reverse of which bears Schatt's credit stamps and is annotated and signed in ink by the photographer: "Paul Newman and Christine White lampooning 'The Method' at an Actors Studio party for Elia Kazan Jan 23/55-Reprinted Jan / 84, Roy Schatt." In fine condition, with a light crease to the bottom border of the mount.
Born in New York City, Schatt (1909-2002) is remembered for his 'method photography' of personalities associated with The Actors Studio during the Lee Strasberg era, using natural light to capture likenesses of icons such as James Dean, Marilyn Monroe, and Steve McQueen in candid, unstaged settings. Schatt's work has been exhibited at the International Center of Photography in NYC, the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, DC, and the Art Institute of Chicago.
