Veteran of the Seminole and Mexican-American Wars (1818-1861) who was the first Union general to be killed in the American Civil War and is noted for his actions in the state of Missouri at the beginning of the conflict. ALS signed "N. Lyon, Capt. 2nd Inf'y, Com'g Comp'y," one page, 7.75 x 9.75, July 1, 1855. Handwritten letter to "Col. H. K. Craig, Chief & Col. of Ordnance, U.S. Army," from "Camp on Missouri River" while en route to Fort Pierre during the First Sioux War. In full: "Herewith enclosed I respectfully transmit the Quarterly Return of Ordnance and Ordnance Stores pertaining to Company 'B' 2nd Infy for the second Quarter 1855. Lieuts Hunter and Long not having turned over the Company property for which they are responsible an Inventory of what is on hand has been made and the articles on it herewith taken up." In fine condition, with light toning along one fold, and a rusty paperclip impression to the top edge. Accompanied by a 1956 invoice for the letter from Walter R. Benjamin Autographs.
