Spanish politician and lawyer (1720-1787) who served as visitor general of public finance in New Spain, governor of the Council of the Indies, and was one of the main promoters of the Bourbon reforms. In the viceroyalty of New Spain, he established a new General Command, which included the Californias, Nueva Vizcaya, New Mexico and Sonora, later adding Coahuila and Texas. Scarce manuscript DS in Spanish, signed “Jph de Galvez,” one page, 8.25 x 11.75, September 17, 1777. Addressed from San Ildefonso, an official letter issued to the Governor of Paraguay, in full (translated): "With this letter is given to the viceroy of these Provinces the convenient order to provide that in Paraguay, ruled by you, Sealed Paper should begin to be used as in the rest of the Americas and that by now you will be provided with as much paper as necessary, until the moment when the annualisation comes and the impression and change for these realms can be arranged for the next bienniums as it is practice for all the America's territories." Signed at the conclusion by Jose de Galvez y Gallardo. In fine condition, with scattered overall foxing. This document relates to the creation of the Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata, a political-territorial entity that established the Spanish Crown in America as an integral part of the Spanish Empire. It was permanently established on October 27, 1777 , by order of the Spanish King Carlos III on a proposal from Jose de Galvez, then serving as the secretary of the Council of the Indies. A decidedly rare document signed by Galvez, whose territorial reorganization of Hispanic America did much to reshape the southwest landscape and the future of California.
