World War I-dated TLS, one page, 7 x 9.25, Assistant Secretary of the Navy letterhead, September 27, 1915. Letter to W. H. Lawson, in full: "Very many thanks for sending me the most interesting and attractive gravel stone. I am very glad to have it and shall often think of you. In regard to the law, I find on inquiry at the Treasury Department that there is still the one hundred allowance in force and this includes articles to that amount for personal use and gifts. It seems to me by your newspaper clippings that the people in New Zealand and Australia are beginning to understand the position of the United States a little better and I sincerely trust that this understanding will continue to grow." In fine condition, with rusty paperclip impressions to the top edge.
