"I gladly enclose check for $7.00 for this poem, only regretting that such a petty sum should be the market price for so rare a piece of imagination"

Irish poet, journalist, author, and activist (1844-1890) who was transported to Western Australia for his association with the Irish Republican Brotherhood (the 'Fenians'); he escaped the colony in 1869 and settled in Boston, where he found work as a poet and reported for The Pilot. ALS, one page, 5.5 x 9, The Pilot Editorial Rooms letterhead, December 19. Handwritten letter, in part: "Excuse me, I am always neglecting people…Your beautiful poem…surprised and delighted me. We rarely pay for poetry—but I gladly enclose check for $7.00 for this poem, only regretting that such a petty sum should be the market price for so rare a piece of imagination." In fine condition, with a slightly trimmed left edge.
