Description

American businessman and politician (1794-1872) who served as the president of the Utica & Schenectady Railroad Company for 20 years. ALS signed “Erastus Corning, Pres't U&SRR C'y,” one page both sides, 8 x 9.75, December 3, 1833. Handwritten letter to New York politician Nathaniel S. Benton, in part: "Yours of the 27th Ult. was duly rec'd. I have consulted with the Directors of the Utica & Sch'y rail road Com'y residing in this city—they are willing to leave the matter of purchasing Mr. Lansing's lot to your better judgment, you being in the spot must know more about its value and the…wants in your Village better than they probably can—at the same they would advise you to consult with the Directors residing in Utica and if they think with you the purchase had best be made and Mr. Lansing should receive his pay on his governing the Com'y a clear title for the same. If the purchase is made your Draft on the Treasurer will be paid." Corning's secretary has added a postscript. In fine condition, with light show-through from two small pieces of tape on the reverse.
