Description

American lawyer, financier, and politician (1823-1890) who is best known for his legal work on land claims during the early years of California's statehood and his presidency of the Northern Pacific Railway from 1879 to 1881. He became the largest landholder in the area that became Billings, Montana, which was later named after him. Desirable partly-printed DS, one page, 11 x 7, April 3, 1882. Stock certificate issued to Frederick Billings for 100 shares of the Oregon and Transcontinental Company, signed on the reverse by Billings, who transfers the shares to Charles M. Newcombe. The central vignette features an allegorical engraving of Western expansion and industrialization, with two Native American braves overlooking a modern town with bridge and locomotive. In fine condition.
