Partly-printed DS, signed “W. C. Van Horne,” one page, 11 x 7.5, May 29, 1909. Stock certificate for ten shares in the Cuba Railroad Company issued to Robert Fleming, signed at the conclusion by William Cornelius Van Horne as president. The certificate features a nice vignette of a steam locomotive. Attractively matted and framed with a portrait and biographical plaque to an overall size of 27.5 x 19. In fine condition.
William Cornelius Van Horne (1843-1915) succeeded Lord Mount Stephen as president of the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1888, and was a prominent member of the Whitney syndicate that created the Cuba Railroad Company. The company built the first trans-country railway connecting Havana with the two eastern provinces (Camaguey and Oriente) and the city of Santiago de Cuba in 1901.
