Partly-printed document, one page, 11 x 5, November 12, 1861. Stock certificate for 100 shares in the Buffalo & State Line Railroad Company issued to Winston S. Churchill's maternal grandfather, "Leonard W. Jerome of N.Y.," with canceled signatures of the company's president and secretary. The slip affixed to the left side notes that the shares were transferred to Jerome from the infamous 'Bear of Wall Street,' Daniel Drew. Matted and framed with portraits of the two (both with facsimile signature) to an overall size of 31.5 x 17.5. In fine condition.
Leonard Jerome (1817-1891) was a financier in Brooklyn, New York, who made and lost several fortunes, often partnering with Cornelius Vanderbilt; his daughter Jeanette was mother to future British Prime Minister Winston S. Churchill. Daniel Drew (1797-1879) was a financier, steamship and railroad developer, whose massive financial success was followed by utter failure and hopeless bankruptcy.
