Description

Unusual railway bond issued to one Vanderbilt and signed by three more

DS, signed “W. K. Vanderbilt,” one page, 12.5 x 9, December 19, 1882. First mortgage bond for $10,000 in the Jersey Shore, Pine Creek and Buffalo Railway Company issued to "W. H. Vanderbilt," signed at the conclusion by William Kissam Vanderbilt and Chauncey M. Depew as trustees. Also endorsed on the reverse by Cornelius Vanderbilt II and Frederick W. Vanderbilt. The receipt is detached but included. In fine condition.

The Jersey Shore, Pine Creek and Buffalo Railway was a railroad built in the early 1880s to give the New York Central and Hudson River Railroad access to the coal regions around Clearfield, Pennsylvania. These significant signers include three sons of William Henry Vanderbilt: William (1849-1920) who managed his family's railroad empire and raced thoroughbred horses; Cornelius (1843-1899), a socialite, railroad executive, and philanthropist remembered for his Newport summer home, The Breakers; and Frederick (1856-1938) who was a director of the New York Central Railroad for 61 years. The other notable signer, Chauncey Depew (1834-1928), was long associated with the Vanderbilts, making his fortune as a lawyer and railroad executive before entering national politics.
