Naval officer (1839-1911) who commanded the destruction of the Spanish fleet at Santiago de Cuba and who led the expedition to rescue Adolphus Greeley in the arctic. LS signed “W. S. Schley,” one page, 8 x 10, Office of Light-House Inspector letterhead, August 23, 1882. Interesting letter with an early reference to the telephone, in full: "I have the honor to inform you that the expenses for telephone & telegraph messages can only be paid by this office when messages bear the address or signature of Inspector. I would suggest that you refer the expenses in this matter to the Lt. House Board and request their instruction in relation to it." In very good to fine condition, with some irregular toning.
