Description

French soldier and politician, duc de Lauzun, later duc de Biron, (1747-1793) remembered for his roles in the American War of Independence and the French Revolutionary Wars. Commanding Lauzun's Legion, he successfully reinforced Washington's troops during the Siege of Yorktown in 1781. He then commanded the French Revolutionary Army on the La Rochelle front during the French Revolution, operating against the Vendéan insurgency. Accused of treason, he was guillotined during the Reign of Terror. ALS in French, signed “Biron,” one page, 7.5 x 9.25, no date. Handwritten copy of a letter sent to him by General Valence, containing a fierce attack on the arrests of generals ordered by the representatives of the people. In fine condition, with a rusty circular paperclip impression to the top.
