English dramatist and civil servant (1731/2-1811) remembered for his hit play The West Indian, and for his role as a secret negotiator with Spain during the Revolutionary War in an effort to secure a peace agreement between the two nations. ALS signed “R. Cumberland,” one page, 4.5 x 7.5, no date. Handwritten letter, in full: "Have you leisure to spare me an hour of your company over my fire side? I want to consult your opinion, & have such confidence in your good nature, that I persuade myself you will excuse the freedom I am using." In very good to fine condition, with rusty circular paperclip impressions to the top, scattered stray ink marks, and adhesive remnants along the edge.
