Description

Congressman, Speaker of the House, and vice president under U. S. Grant (1823-1885) who led the effort to pass the Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution, abolishing slavery. Two bold autographs on attractive Congressional stationery: an ALS, one page, 5 x 7.75, House of Representatives, Fortieth Congress letterhead, November 21, 1868, to "Miss Booth," in part: "Thanks for your cordial & welcome note, & also for the advance copy of the Bazar. The portrait, sketch & all are in every way satisfactory, the likeness better than usual in newspapers, & the pen portraits are general & warmly expressed"; and a hand-addressed and free franked 40th Congress mailing envelope, addressed by Colfax to journalist Benjamin Perley Poore, and franked in the upper right, "Schuyler Colfax, Speaker H. R." In fine condition.
