King of the Belgians from 1865 to 1909, chiefly remembered for the founding and exploitation of the Congo Free State as a private venture (1835-1909). ALS in French, four pages on two adjoining sheets, 8 x 10, June 15, 1859. The Belgian king sends thanks for the compliments addressed to him on the occasion of the birth of his son Leopold, who is big and fat. In small part (translated): "I hope he will look like his grandfather someday anyway, but so far he's not a very handsome boy." In fine condition, with a rusty circular paperclip impression to the top. Prince Leopold, Duke of Brabant, the second child and only son of King Leopold II of Belgium and his wife, Marie Henriette of Austria, and heir apparent to the Belgian throne, was born on June 12, 1859.
