Description

On being a savior: "I am just a common, cautious woman and surely not a daredevil"

Dutch citizen (1909-2010) who hid Anne Frank, her family, and four other Dutch Jews from the Nazis during World War II. Together with her colleague Bep Voskuijl, she retrieved Anne Frank's diary after the family was arrested, and kept the papers safe until Otto Frank returned from Auschwitz in June 1945. TLS, one page, 8.25 x 11.5, Anne Frank House letterhead, May 1, 2009. Letter to Justin Koepsel, in part: "I really appreciate your admiring words. However, they cause me some concern too. Let me explain. If people consider me a kind of heroin[e], they may doubt whether they would do what I once did. Not many consider themself brave and therefore might refrain from helping endangered people. This is why I want everyone to know that I am just a common, cautious woman and surely not a daredevil. However, I knew that if I would not help, my conscience later in life would torture me, causing many sleepless nights. Such a future I did not want, because that can be worse than losing your life. Therefore, I helped, hoping that everyone meeting such dilemma, understands and accepts my reasoning, and will reach out too!" In fine condition, with some faint staining to the top.
