A present from Barnum to his 20-year-old granddaughter

Signed book: Struggles and Triumphs; Forty Years' Recollections of P. T. Barnum. First edition. Buffalo, New York: The Courier Company, 1882. Hardcover bound in three quarter morocco with marbled boards and endpapers, 6.5 x 9.25, 790 pages. Signed and inscribed on the first free end page in fountain pen, "To my granddaughter, Carrie Thompson Hurd, with best wishes, P. T. Barnum, Dec. 25th 1882." Autographic condition: fine. Book condition: VG-/None, with losses to head of spine, some flaking to leather, cracked front hinge, and foxing to frontispiece and title page. A desirable Christmas present from Barnum to his 20-year-old granddaughter; sadly, Caroline Thompson 'Carrie' Hurd died less than a year later on July 28, 1883.
