British arctic explorer and scientist (1789-1857) who produced a pioneering survey of the eastern coast of Greenland and produced a number of important papers on the nature of terrestrial magnetism. ALS signed “W. Scoresby,” one page both sides, 4.5 x 7.25, January 7, 1848. Handwritten letter to "Captain Wilkes," in part: "Your friendly lecture reached me here, and was read with much pleasure. Though I did not apprize you, as I might have done, of my arrival in this country…I leave this, I expect, on Tuesday next, for Burlington & Philadelphia." In fine condition, with a small spot of loss to an upper corner.
