American aeronaut and inventor (1832-1913) whose Union balloon corps tracked enemy movements during the Civil War, known as the father of military aerial reconnaissance in the United States. LS signed “T. S. C. Lowe,” three pages on two adjoining sheets, 5 x 8, March 27, 1868. Letter to James T. Ames of the Ames Manufacturing Company, in part: "I forgot to mention that I have had a draughtsman here for several days and have been getting up a plan for arranging and putting up the Ice works in the most simple manner, whereby we shall be insured of the certainty of always being able to go on with the freezing unless the engine itself gets out of order. The plan is for either beam or oscillating engines and is adapted for all purposes except small ships, and even on them it could be arranged…I also forgot to mention that Mr. Reed informed me that his list was nearly full, and he should want the machinery now on hand, and as it is not going far away, and he going to want more for the same place, I think he had better have it, unless some of the Holyoke parties prefer having it, to waiting for more. The number of applicants for territory and person enquiring about the enterprise is daily increasing. The thing is pretty large, and it takes some time to start it, but when fully going it will increase rapidly." Lowe signs his surname after a brief handwritten postscript. In fine condition, with a light diagonal crease to the last page.
