Description

Unique New York City policeman's archive from the ticker tape parade honoring Astronaut John Glenn on March 1, 1962, held to celebrate his success aboard the Friendship 7. The group contains: three original vintage glossy 8 x 10 silver gelatin photographs of the parade, showing Glenn waving from a limousine (all with heavy creasing); a 9-page carbon copy of the "Tactical Patrol Force Detail Roster" for March 1-2, 1962; a 6-page carbon copy of the "Tactical Patrol Force Detail Roster" for the "Parade Escort"; a hand-drawn map and several pages of handwritten notes pertaining to the event; a 19-page packet outlining the "City of New York Police Arrangements for Visit of Lt. Col. John Glenn, Jr., and Fellow Astronauts," detailing schedules and procedures for their arrival, motorcades, parade route, reception at City Hall, luncheon at the Waldorf-Astoria, and related instructions and assignments; a 7-page agenda for the "Parade and Ceremonies for Col. John Glenn, Astronaut"; a few other packets containing orders and instructions; and several newspaper clippings covering the momentous occasion. In overall very good condition, with a tape-repaired tear to the hand-drawn map, and creasing to the photographs.
