French physicist, astronomer, and mathematician (1774-1862) who established the reality of meteorites, made an early balloon flight, and studied the polarization of light. Scarce ALS in French, signed “J. B. Biot,” three pages on two adjoining sheets, 6.5 x 8.5, November 18, 1851. Lengthy handwritten letter to a friend of his, Mr. Liès, who runs a boarding school. Biot relates his meeting with a certain Mr. Laurens, who runs a laboratory, and his wife. They have a child and would like to put him in a boarding school but Mr. Laurens is very ill and has no money to pay for the school. Mr. Liès, who is aware of this difficult situation, has asked Biot to tell Mr. Laurens that he offers a free place to his child in his institution. Mr. Biot is writing to Mr. Liès to let him know that Mr. Laurens and his wife have accepted his very generous offer. They will find someone to bring the child to Charleville where the boarding school is. In fine condition.
