Scientist and a pioneer in the study of electric and luminescent phenomena (1788-1878) who was the father of the physicist Edmond Becquerel and grandfather of Nobel Prize-winning physicist Henri Becquerel. In 1837 he became a Fellow of the Royal Society, and received its Copley Medal for his various memoirs on electricity; his name is one of the 72 names inscribed on the Eiffel Tower.
