Description

American politician (1760-1833) who succeeded Alexander Hamilton as Secretary of the Treasury under Washington and Adams, and went on to serve as governor of Connecticut. Full free frank, measuring 9.5 x 8 unfolded with a central panel of 5.75 x 3.5, addressed in another hand to "Nathaniel Appleton Esquire, Commissioner of loans for the State of Massachusetts, Boston," and franked in the lower left, "Free, Oliv: Wolcott Jr." A contemporary annotation, dated March 28, 1792, makes note of interest paid. In fine condition, with seal-related paper loss to top edge.
