Description

The sixth vice president of the United States under James Madison, who also served as the fourth governor of New York (1774-1825). Partly-printed DS, one page, 16.25 x 10, March 2, 1814. As governor of New York, Tompkins appoints James J. Jones as "Ensign of a Company in the 85th Regiment of Infantry." Signed at the conclusion by Governor Tompkins and countersigned by Jacob R. Van Rensselaer as Secretary of State of New York. In very good to fine condition, with minor edge losses and partial splits to folds.
