French aviation pioneer (born 1901) who made several heroic flights that helped establish an airline between France and South America; in the process, he became the first pilot to fly from Paris to the Pacific Ocean, finally landing in Santiago, Chile. He and his crew disappeared at sea on a planned flight from Dakar to Natal, Brazil, on December 7, 1936. Vintage glossy 9.5 x 7 photo of Jean Mermoz's Couzinet 70 Arc-en-Ciel monoplane soaring over trees, signed in fountain pen, "Mermoz." Reverse bears a Georges Rouquet photograph stamp. In fine condition, with scattered light creasing.
