Description

Masefield writes to "Galahad," with two sketches of 'Camelot': "You might like to see your ancestral home"

ALS, two pages both sides, 4.25 x 7, Hill Crest letterhead, no date. Handwritten letter to Joseph Andrew Galahad, regarding poems sent to him. In part: "I've read your poems now, & thank you for letting me see them…The poems I liked best were the one in your letter on England, & Isolde. These I liked very much; & also the one in C' verse. The others I did not care for so well. I hope that by this time you've been well enough to write a lot more poems, & that you will some day let me see them…Some day you must come to see England. Last Sunday I was in Somersetshire, & passed between two of the sites which claim to be Camelot, which the first recorded man of your name made a great reputation. The river Camel still runs there, but nothing is left of Arthur's court in either place. One site is like this [sketch of a hilltop] rising out of plains, like the little island it once was: the other [similar sketch] is a sort of hill fortress on the highland left by Camel river on its bank. You might like to see your ancestral home." In fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope, addressed in Masefield's hand.
