Description

Revolutionary War-dated manuscript document, one page both sides, being a return from Camp White Plains, September 5-12, 1778, at which time General Washington was headquartered and residing at White Plains, New York. Superb document with extraordinary details concerning Washington’s army at White Plains:

One side headed: "A Weekly Return of Capt. William Treadwell’s Company in Col. John Crane’s R[egiment] of Artillery Annexed to Genl. Nixon’s Brigade. White Plains Sept. 12, 1778." Details about "Distribution" - Present fit for duty - Sick Present - Sick in Hospital - On Furlough - On Command (including "1 Serjeant with General Gates with master, 1 bombardier with General Knox & 1 matross").

Opposite side headed: "A Weekly Return of a Brigade of foot commanded by Honbl. John Nixon, Esq. Brig. Gen[eral]. Camp White Plains, Sept 5, 1778." Listing of Colonels names, including Greaton, Putnam Nixon, Wood’s militia - "Col. Woods Regt of militia employed in foraging." Listing of Rank & File at various locations including Fish Kill, Brookfield, Danbury, Peeks Kill, Horse Neck, Sharon, Bedford, Albany, Boston, West Point, Robinson’s House. Noting presence of 4 blacksmiths, 2 Indians, 1 tallow chandler, and an unidentified French major. Promotions, desertions, reductions in rank, discharges, and 3 privates in captivity. Certain personnel assigned to Genl. Scott, Col. Hay, Col. Batson.

In good to very good condition, with stains, repairs to folds, and minor loss of text on one margin.
