Thomas Paine—as "Common Sense"—weighs in on the Silas Deane Affair: "Honesty is the best policy"

The Pennsylvania Packet or the General Advertiser, April 13, 1779; printed and sold by John Dunlap. Extensive letter from "Common Sense" [Thomas Paine] to Mr. Deane concerning alleged financial misdeeds by Mr. Deane, announcing "honesty is the best policy." General Lincoln sent in a flag to General Prevost requesting an account of the prisoners taken by the British at Bryer Creek [Georgia], and the account from General Prevost is reported. British troops destined for Savannah and Port-Royal, and mutiny among British soldiers due to stoppage of rum rations by Prevost. Treason trials in the Court of Oyer and Terminer in Philadelphia. Proceedings in the General Assembly of Pennsylvania.
