Scarce plaquette presented to 1912 United States Olympic Team members at the inauguration of Pommery Park in France, the seat of the International Olympic Committee, on July 23, 1912. Silver, 70 mm x 44 mm, 72 gm, by Andre Mery. The front depicts a wide view of the Reims park, a figure of a Greek athlete, and a tablet, which reads: “Reception du Team, Olympique American, 23 Juillet 1912”; the reverse shows a beautiful city view and an engraved tablet: “800 Metres, 1er, D. S. Caldwell.” Stamped “Argent” on an edge. Includes the original brown paper box. American runner David Story Caldwell finished fourth in the 800 meter at the Stockholm 1912 Summer Olympics on July 8, 1912; two weeks later Caldwell earned this plaquette when he took first in the event at the Pommery Park exhibition.
