Description

To an anti-war reverend amidst WWI: "I have been hoping that the revelations of the present war and the acts of Germany would lead the pacifists to take a different view"

TLS signed “Wm. H. Taft,” one page, 7 x 9.25, personal letterhead, March 12, 1917. Letter to Rev. Oliver H. Bronson, in part: "I enjoyed my visit to Salem very much, and was sorry I did not have the pleasure of talking with you. You say you are opposed to military preparedness and war as defense, because you have become convinced that war under modern conditions is worse than futile. I am sorry to differ with you in this regard toto coelo. I have been hoping that the revelations of the present war and the acts of Germany would lead the pacifists to take a different view." In fine condition. Less than a month later, President Wilson, Taft's successor, went before Congress and asked for a declaration of war against Germany.
