ALS signed “Willie,” one page both sides, 6.25 x 9.25, Villa Mauresque letterhead, January 29, 1952. Handwritten letter to Academy Award-winning actress Ruth Gordon, expressing his pleasure at the telegram he received on his "178th birthday" from her husband, Garson Kanin. Maugham continues: "I shall put it among those of Mrs. Siddons, Nell Gwyn, Peg Woffington, & Perdita Robinson all of whom have sent me kind messages on my previous birthdays. Nell, she was one of my favorite girls. Do you remember how when she saw her coachman had a black eye & asked him how he had come by it he said he'd had a fight with a man. 'What did you fight him for?' 'Because he said you was a whore, Mistress Gwyn.' 'Well, so I am, you fool.' Those were the days." In fine condition. Accompanied by the original hand-addressed mailing envelope.
