Dumas protests the censorship of his newest work, La Dame aux Perles

LS in French by Jean-François Mocquard, signed "Mocquard," one page, 8 x 12.25, Cabinet de l'Empereur letterhead, May 13, 1853. Letter to the Minister of the Interior by Emperor Napoleon III's chief of staff, in part (translated): "The Emperor charges me to have the honor to communicate to you the attached complaint of Mr. Alexandre Dumas, fils, against the decision of the censorship committee which rejected his new piece entitled: La Dame aux Perles. His Majesty asks you to take note of the reasons for the performance of this drama and, if they do not appear to you to be insufficient, to lift the defense." In very good condition, with light creasing, corner loss, and staining along the left edge.
